ABSTRACT:
A 25-year study of a population of about 350 colonies of the red harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex barbatus) colonies in southeastern Arizona examines how colonies operate without central control and how colony behavior develops. Foraging is regulated by a network of interactions among workers. Workers respond to brief antennal contact in which they assess the task-specific hydrocarbon profile of their nestmates. Colonies vary in the sensitivity of foraging activity to fluctuations in food availability. Combining behavioral measures of foraging activity with data on the reproductive success of known, individual colonies, we are now asking whether how variation in foraging is related to reproductive success.
